Primary energy sources include fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, and coal), nuclear energy, and renewable sources of energy. Electricity is a secondary energy source that is generated (produced) from primary energy sources. Renewable energy plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When renewable energy sources are used, the demand for fossil fuels is reduced. Unlike fossil fuels, non-biomass renewable sources of energy (hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar) do not directly emit greenhouse gases. While this is not the most energy-efficient use of natural gas, it may turn out to be the most economically feasible approach to help clean up an existing coal fleet while not having to invest in hundreds of millions, or even billions, of dollars for back-end pollution control equipment.
